Pereira, my hometown, struggles with a conflicted relationship with women. Since the 19th century, Pereiran women have faced the unjust label of prostitutes, a narrative spreading globally. Coupled with women's exploitation in a society influenced by drug trafficking dynamics since the 1980s, characterized by a 'narco-aesthetic,' it perpetuates gender-based violence.
Today, Pereira is a hub of macho violence in Colombia. During lockdowns, Pereiran women demanded an end to rampant rapes and femicides by civilians, police, and military against women and girls.
Rivers from our mountains, like many in Colombia, are mass graves, bearing witness to violated and missing women. This is a heartfelt farewell.
